The way different subjects are taught in school can make it tough to combine them all in one lesson, especially when you have art, music, and gym all with different teachers! But there are still cool ways to sneak those subjects into your main lessons. In science and math especially, using a little art or music can really help kids understand things better.
When I was a student teacher, I tried to mix art with science. I was teaching second graders about the solar system, and I wanted them to really get the idea and learn all the important words. To make sure they understood, I had them draw pictures of the planets with all the details and write down their names. Then, in another class, we built a bigger model of the whole solar system together, with all the planets labeled and in their proper places. This way, the kids could actually see how the planets move around the sun, and using different colors helped them remember what each planet is like.
Incorporating art and music into classroom learning enhances the learning experience, helps students express themselves creatively, and encourages critical thinking. Research shows that music and art have effects in other domains, such as improving memory retention, spatial and visual skills, and language fluency.
